Social

Of course being a member of Eyott isn’t just about the sailing, there’s a social side to the club as well.

We run various types of events throughout the year including Chinese / Indian / fish and chips take-away nights and quizzes at the club house and our large more formal end of season dinner  “The Laying Up Supper” in November.

The first event of the year is the “At Home” held at a member’s house, normally the Commodores.

Traditionally our Fitting out Supper is held in March. This is an evening meal held the day before the first race of the season. This year club members were well looked after by the staff at Yatsin in South Woodham Ferrers. We enjoyed a 3-course Chinese meal with a selection of delicious starters, followed by crispy duck pancakes and finally a variety of specialist dishes with rice.  An excellent evening.

Our annual open day is an opportunity to welcome visitors to the club with a chance to experience dinghy sailing for themselves.  Many people have joined Eyott after coming to an open day. With a friendly atmosphere and lots going on, it is a good social occasion for both new and existing members This year was no exception, a warm spring day, BBQ, a good tide and light winds.

During the early part of the summer members of other sailing clubs are invited to the Open House event, giving everyone the chance to meet the sailors with which we share the River Crouch.

In August we hold Eyott regatta week.  In the evenings we run a range of social events including a quiz, pub games night and rounders in one of the local parks.  At the end of the week we have the prize giving and a barbecue.

Our Breakfast race was re-introduced in 2013.  We had one of the largest turnouts of the year for this race and afterwards everyone sat down to a full al fresco English breakfast.  It will now be in the annual calendar as a regular event.

Even though the sailing stops by the end of October, the socials continue. A big event for the members is our Bonfire Party at the beginning of November.  Soup, baked potatoes and bread pudding are enjoyed round the bonfire followed by family games. Our large formal end of season dinner  “The Laying Up Supper” is held in November where the sailing trophies, hard won throughout the year, are presented. We round off the year with a Christmas social in December.
